Verse memory is a key component in Bible classes. Not only is it important at GDQ, but it can change your life!!! This page summarizes the approach that is used to learn verses for grade 6 Bible at GDQ.

NOTE: All students will memorize in the NIV. If a student has a specific reason for appealing this (i.e., to use a different version), parents may request this in writing. Along with the request please supply a hardcopy of ALL verses which will be memorized in the version which is being requested. This should be printed and not handwritten.

NOTE: In the choosing of verses to memorize, preference has been given to passages rather than just individual verses in memory work.

NOTE: Daily verse review is REQUIRED. Individual student's pace may vary, but EVERY student should be reviewing a given set of verses on a daily basis. This means reviewing at least 5 days per week. (Extra Credit will be given for reviewing more than 5 days during a week.)

NOTE: Quizzes will be given at any time (normally every Monday, but exceptions will happen). Which verses will be tested is not known until the students receive the quiz in their hand, so they must be prepared for all verses they have studied up until that point. Regular (daily!) review according to the schedule given will make these quizzes easy and non-stressful and an opportunity for a grade-booster. Lack of regular review will (a) increase test anxiety, (b) result in a reduced grade, and (c) result in the consequences expected for non-completion of required homework. Normally there will be a single warning within a 6-week period for incomplete verse memory review before consequences are received. (Reviewing fewer than 4 days per week is considered incomplete homework.)

Each student will be given a schedule which reflects their expected ability. Most students will be given the schedule which will result in completion of all verses required for "Grade Level" -- they can get a grade as high as a B+ with this schedule. There will be a "challenge schedule" which will learn verses slightly faster and will allow the students to aim for an A grade. If a student is capable of more or is not capable of the level suggested then an adjustment may be made with the involvement of teacher, student, and child.
